La Colmena is a community-based organization founded in 2014, working to empower day laborers, domestic workers, and other low-wage immigrant workers in Staten Island through organizing, education, culture, and economic development. We are committed to providing the tools they need to become leaders who can speak and advocate for themselves and their communities. In partnership with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, our organizers train day laborers and domestic workers so they can act as ambassadors to their peers. At La Colmena, we serve a diverse community of individuals and families with roots in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru among other countries. Our clients have a range of literacy levels and speak indigenous languages. Beyond our work with day laborers and domestic workers, we run other projects such as the Staten Island Butterfly Effect which is aimed at empowering immigrant youth, the Nani Migrante Transnational Project which serves as a bridge between families from San Jeronimo Xayacatlan, Puebla, and NYC, and the Staten Island L'Unicorns, the first LGBTQIA+ LatinX group on Staten Island.
